a contaminação por Hg começou no período colonial no sul do Brasil (século dezoito). A
de marismas devido à bioturbação causada principalmente por plantas e caranguejos.; The Patos Lagoon Estuary is subject to an irregular hydrological regime and receives
mercury (Hg) contaminated effluents from the city of Rio Grande, which is located on its
right intertidal zone. The soil cover of Rio Grande is severely contaminated by Hg (up to
27 mg kg-1
) down to the water table level. Dissolved mercury concentration in
groundwater was up to 13 times higher than that found in the background site. Despite
the identification of Hg sources from Rio Grande to the estuary (soil cover and
groundwater), there was no clear evidence of the antiquity of Hg contamination in Rio
Grande. A joint assessment of the distribution of geochemical tracers (mercury, lead,
copper and uranium) in the sediments of a shallow cove close to Rio Grande and the
consultation to historical documents allowed us to discover that Hg contamination started
in the colonial period in Southern Brazil (eighteenth century). The mercury distribution
in sediments from shallow areas along the salinity gradient in the estuary is controlled by
fine grain contents and probably by the formation of metal sulfide. Immobilization of Hg
in sediments probably occurs via binding to organic matter coating on fine grain sediment
particles, as well as by incorporation into and/or coprecipitation with iron sulfide.
Mercury distribution in salt marsh sediments is chiefly controlled by fine grain sediment
contents. The adsorption/incorporation of mercury into iron sulfide probably is a process
of minor importance in salt marsh sediments because of the bioturbation caused mainly
by burrow crabs and plants.

The Rio Grande do Sul Coastal Plain (RSCP) (southern Brazil) is composed by extended marine and continental deposits related to at least four barrier-lagoon systems of Pleistocene-Holocene age. Part of these deposits is currently submerged and passing through erosion processes by waves. Vertebrate and invertebrate body and trace fossils are constantly exhumed from these deposits and redeposited on the modern beach face. Among them, a total of 253 fragments of crustacean burrows were collected and the study of these materials is the main goal of the present manuscript. Different analyses were performed in order to describe the record in the RSCP, such as morphological analysis, which included measurements of the external and internal diameter, wall width (in cross section) and pellet diameter, when possible. Chemical and microstructural analyzes obtained by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffractometry (DRX), Energy Dispersion X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and petrographic thin-sections.Two ichnospecies of Ophiomorpha were recognized (O. nodosa and O. puerilis), but most of the materials can only be assigned to the SOT group (Ophiomorpha, Spongeliomorpha and Thalassinoides), mainly because of the lacking of a pelleted lining. The taphonomical processes (exhumation, reworking and transportation) that acted in the formation of this ex situ assemblagecould be one of the reasons of the absence of pellets. The paleoenvironmental dynamics and a taphonomical reconstitutionis presented to demonstrate how the processes affect the traces since its construction, through exhumation until its deposition. Furthermore, neoichnological observations led us to infer larger producers in comparison to the extant ghost shrimp Sergio mirim

A primeira, meramente hidrodinâmica, considerou
Pequenas mudanças no
As
costeira adjacente à Lagoa dos Patos; The Molhes da Barra jetties, at the mouth of Patos Lagoon estuary, have recently
undergone modifications that have increased their length, making them symmetrical,
more tapered and convergent. Studies have reported that construction or
modification of coastal structures affects the dynamics of regional circulation, which
can therefore influence the transport and distribution of properties and organisms in
the estuary. The croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, is an estuarine dependent fish with
planktonic eggs and larvae, which has economic importance for regional fisheries. In
this thesis, I study the influence of the changes in the Molhes da Barra jetties on the
transport of croaker eggs and larvae to the Patos Lagoon estuary (PLE). Transport
was simulated using the TELEMAC-3D hydrodynamic model coupled to a passive
particle module. Two categories of simulations were performed with extreme flow
characteristics and controlled wind situations. The first, purely hydrodynamic,
considered extreme run-off conditions characteristic of periods of ENSO events, to
analyze the differences between the old and the new configuration of the Molhes da
Barra jetties. Subsequently, controlled simulations with SW, S and SE winds lasting
5 (five) days in January of the same years were carried out, coupling passive
particles to the hydrodynamic component. Results showed that the modifications
made to the Molhes da Barra jetties reduced the extent of saline intrusion in the new
configuration. Similarly, changes in the structure of the lateral stratification, as well as
on its time of occurrence, were reduced by about one third in the new configuration of
the jetties. A delay in the beginning of lateral stratification was observed due to the
incident wind, establishing itself first during the SW winds, followed by the S winds
and then the SE wind. This delay was more evident in the new configuration. Slight
changes in the angle of incidence as well as a reduction of about 20% in the intensity
of the current speeds of both flood and ebb flows and a partial centralization of the
flow along the navigation channel were observed. The hydrodynamic changes
influenced the transport of eggs and larvae, with a reduction in the abundance and
extension of the incursion into the estuary with the new configuration of the jetties.
The reduction was also noticeable in the average distance traveled by the larvae at
the end of each day. Results of this study are the first to report the changes in the
transport of eggs and larvae of the croaker after the recent modernization works and
serve as a basis for further studies associated with respect to the species' life cycle.
Associated with other regional studies, these results can be used as a basis for
understanding and taking management measures to circumvent the scenario of
declining fishing stocks in the estuary and coastal region adjacent to Patos Lagoon

Icebergs são complexos e importantes elementos do ambiente polar. Corpos
proveniente do derretimento, impactar a estrutura termohalina local.
icebergs e seu possível impacto nas mudanças climáticas.; Icebergs are complex and important features of the polar environment. Bodies
of continental ice they are able to interact with their surroundings in numerous ways.
This includes interactions with the seabed and continental margins, transport of
nutrients and terrigenous material, as well as interactions by impacting the
thermohaline structure through cooling and freshwater input from melting icebergs.
Being of similar magnitude to ice shelf basal melting, icebergs plays an important and
not yet fully understood role in the heat and freshwater balance of the Antarctic
environment, this knowledge gap does not close due to the operational and
technological complexity associated with a reliable monitoring of icebergs in the polar
environment. In this sense, this thesis presents (i) a new autonomous method for
large-scale monitoring and analysis of icebergs from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)
based on artificial intelligence; next steps are the scientific application of the
developed method in order to (ii) investigate and document the pan-Antarctic nearcoastal iceberg distribution and its variability between years and to relate it with the
main Antarctic calving fronts and bottom water formation sites; the final goal is (iii) to
present an extension of the detection method that allows to automatically track
icebergs over time and to observe their potential freshwater input via satellites. As
results, the method proved to be highly adaptable and capable of distinguishing
icebergs with a high average accuracy of 97.5 ± 0.6%. As a first scientific application,
it was possible to document and investigate the spatial evolution of the size distribution
(and mass) of pan-Antarctic icebergs on the continental shelf and in the near-coastal
region for the years of 1997, 2000 and 2008. Finally, this thesis presents and
discusses the tracking capabilities of the method proposed for a case study of the
Weddell Sea, Antarctica. The extended method allows no only to monitor drifting
icebergs but also their potential freshwater input over time automatically. Altogether,
this work sheds light on the applicability of novel artificial intelligence methods to the
complex iceberg classification problem. It bridges the gap between observational and
numerical modeling efforts, which could be an essential step for future studies of the
spatio-temporally changing freshwater input from Antarctic icebergs and thus climate
change.
