Crescimento econômico das cidades nordestinas: um enfoque da nova geografia econômica

Abstract

Este artigo é um estudo empírico sobre os determinantes do crescimento econômico e populacional das cidades nordestinas na década de noventa. Para este fim, são utilizadas variáveis que representam as características iniciais destas cidades. As variáveis escolhidas seguem as contribuições teóricas das novas teorias do crescimento econômico e da nova geografia econômica. O artigo mostra a existência de convergência de rendas per capita nas cidades nordestinas no período. Além disso, os resultados obtidos reforçam o papel do capital humano e da urbanização na promoção de externalidades positivas, Knowledge Spillovers, que geram crescimento econômico. O artigo destaca também o papel de externalidades negativas, tais como congestionamento e pobreza, como redutores do crescimento econômico. Os resultados mostram que o crescimento populacional das cidades nordestinas é afetado positivamente por medidas de renda e qualidade de vida. O artigo conclui que houve um pequeno movimento de dispersão e interiorização da população nas cidades nordestinas.

This article is an empirical study on the determinants of economic growth and population growth in the Northeaster’s cities in the nineties. For this goal, it is used variables that represent the initial characteristics of these cities. The chosen variables follow the theoretical contributions from the new growth theories and the new economic geography. The paper shows that there was convergence of per capita incomes in the Northeastern cities in the period. Besides, the results reinforce that human capital and urbanization are complementary in the promotion of positive externalities, Knowledge Spillovers, which generate economic growth. The article also shows that negative externalities, such as congestion and poverty, reduce the economic growth. The results show that the Northeastern cities population growth is affected positively by measures of income and life quality. The article concludes that there was a small dispersion movement of the population in the Northeastern cities.
