Abstract:
Este texto aborda a História da Biblioteca Pública do Estado de Mato Grosso (BPEMT), de 1912 a 1950, atualmente, Biblioteca Pública Estadual Estevão de Mendonça. Trata-se de um extrato da pesquisa de Mestrado em Educação, realizada na Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, campus Rondonópolis, que investigou a história e as práticas de leitura realizadas no interior da BPEMT. Nesta oportunidade, apresenta-se a história de sua fundação, bem como a sua estrutura física e organização. Caracteriza-se como pesquisa histórica, na perspectiva da história cultural, tendo utilizado como instrumento para coleta de dados o registro digital (fotos) e a organização e transcrição do conteúdo das fontes, que incluem: relatórios e regulamentos emitidos pelos diretores da biblioteca, mensagens do governador à Assembleia Legislativa e artigos de jornais. Apoiou-se em autores como Le Goff (1993), Chartier (2001), Darnton (2010a, 2010b), Deaecto (2011), Abreu (1999), entre outros. Os resultados evidenciam que a biblioteca foi criada e mantida, em Cuiabá, até a década de 1950, como auxiliar da instrução pública; possuía um acervo diversificado constituído, em grande parte, por doações; houve presença de consulentes, ou seja, possíveis leitores, de forma efetiva, até a década de 50, período em que a biblioteca ficou praticamente desativada. Considera-se que a BPEMT foi um espaço que colaborou para as práticas de leitura da comunidade de leitores de Cuiabá, principalmente estudantes e alguns profissionais da elite cuiabana, como advogados e engenheiros. As informações sistematizadas no estudo poderão contribuir para a construção da história cultural de Mato Grosso.
This text deals with the History of the Public Library of the State of Mato Grosso (BPEMT) from 1912 to 1950, currently named Public State Library Estevão de Mendonça. This is part of a research for Master's in Education, carried out at the Federal University of Mato Grosso, in the Rondonópolis campus, which investigated the history and the reading practices carried out with in the BPEMT. Here, we will present the history of its foundation, as well as, its physical structure and organization. It can be characterized as historical research from the perspective of its cultural history. Besides the digital records (photos), the tools used for data collection were reports and regulations issued by library directors, messages from the governor to the Legislative Assembly and newspaper articles, which have been organized and transcribed. The work was based on authors such as: Le Goff (1993), Chartier (2001), Darnton (2010a 2010b), Deaecto (2011), Abreu (1999), among others. The results show that the library was created and maintained in Cuiabá, until the 1950s, as an aid to public education; it had a diverse collection made up largely of donations; there were consultants, that is, possible readers, effectively until the 50s, a period when the library was practically disabled. BPEMT is considered a space that collaborated with the reading practices of the community of readers in Cuiabá, mainly students and some professionals from the Cuiabana elite, such as lawyers and engineers. The information systematized in the study may contribute to the construction of the cultural history of Mato Grosso.
