Histórias que se confundem: a criação do Gabinete Português de Leitura da Bahia e a Biblioteca Infante Dom Henrique.

Abstract

Este artigo se propõe a narrar a história da criação do Gabinete Português de Leitura da Bahia (GPL) e como o desejo de criar um espaço de leitura para os portugueses na Bahia influenciou nessa decisão, mostrando como a Instituição e sua Biblioteca se entrecruzam no sonho luso. Os objetivos foram mostrar que, na intenção da proposta de criação do GPL, já estava evidenciada qual relevância teria a Biblioteca e discutir como a Biblioteca ocupou o cenário cultural de Salvador no século XIX. O método para levantamento dos estudos foi pesquisa em fonte primária, através do documento manuscrito fundador do GPL.

The intention of this article is to narrate the history of the creation of the Gabinete Português de Leitura da Bahia (GPL) and how the desire to create a reading space for the Portuguese in Bahia influenced this decision, showing how the institution and its library intertwine with the Portuguese dream. The objectives were to show that in the intention of the proposal to create the GPL, it was already evident what relevance the library would have and to discuss how the Library occupied the cultural scene of Salvador in the 19th century. The method for surveying the studies was research in a primary source, through the GPL founding manuscript document.
