Matar um jaguar: a natureza na cultura Guarani através do discurso missionário

Abstract

O presente estudo tem por objetivo refletir sobre a relação entre missionários,reduzidos e natureza durante o processo de instalação das reduções no antigo Paraguai.Para tal, explora-se em primeiro lugar a percepção missionária sobre a natureza, specialmenteos usos desta na catequese. Em seguida, através de uma tentativa de aproximação etno-histórica, avalia-se a percepção indígena sobre o mundo natural, especialmente no que serefere à onça (jaguar). Paralelamente, discute-se a relação de poder estabelecida entre missionários e reduzidos, sobretudo os métodos experimentados pelos pretensos evangelizadores e as possíveis aceitações provindas da sociedade reducional.

This article reflects on the relation between missionaries, reduced Indians and nature during the process of installation of the Jesuit reductions in old Paraguay. First is explores the missionaries’ perception of nature, especially the uses of nature in catechesis. Then, through an ethno-historical approach, it assesses the perception of the natural world by the indigenous people, particularly in relation to the ounce (jaguar). In parallel to that, it discusses the power relationship established between missionaries and reduced Indians, mainly between the methods used by the evangelizers and their possible acceptance by the Reduction’s society.
