O alvorecer do naturalismo na prosa do Rio Grande do Sul: Paulo Marques e Vênus ou o dinheiro (1881)

Abstract

A presente dissertação de mestrado em História da Literatura objetiva resgatar e analisar a obra Vênus ou o dinheiro, do escritor pelotense Paulo Marques (1857-1884), publicada originalmente como folhetim no jornal Onze de Junho entre 8 de julho e 9 de outubro de 1881 e republicada em livro, em 1885, após a morte do autor. E, ainda, resgatar dados sobre a bibliografia do escritor e a sua atuação no sistema literário gaúcho como o primeiro prosador naturalista do Rio Grande do Sul. Segundo Guilhermino Cesar (1971, p. 331-332), trata-se do “romance mais atrevido de quantos se publicaram no século passado, em terras do Rio Grande”. O enfoque buscará perceber como se articulam os dados sócio-históricos na obra que em diversas passagens critica a monarquia, a igreja católica, a educação brasileira e os casamentos por interesse, pensando esse romance no contexto da produção literária do final do século XIX.

This dissertation for the master in the History of Literature aims to recover and analyze the work Venus or the money, by the writer Paulo Marques from Pelotas (1857 - 1884), originally published in the newspaper June 11th as a feuilleton between July 8th and October 9th 1881 and republished, in 1885, in a book after the author's death. Moreover, it aims to rescue data on the bibliography of the writer and his activity in the literary system as the first naturalistic prose writer from Rio Grande do Sul. According to Guilhermino Cesar (1971, p. 331-332), this is the "most daring novel that was published in the past century, in Rio Grande do Sul". The focus will search to realize how the social-historical data are articulated in the work that in several passages criticizes the monarchy, the Catholic Church, the Brazilian education and marriages of interest, considering this novel in the context of the literary production of the late nineteenth century.
