Abstract:
O princípio da regra variável é claro: para duas formas serem consideradas variantes de uma mesma variável, é necessário ter o mesmo
contexto e o mesmo valor de verdade. Ainda que muitas pesquisas sociolingüísticas se enquadrem nesse pressuposto, fenômenos sintáticos, discursivos e pragmáticos enfrentam resistência de alguns teóricos e exigem do pesquisador uma decisão: estender a noção de significado ou reduzi-la. Ambas as alternativas implicam discussões: estendendo noção de significado, temos, de fato, regra variável? Reduzindo significado, não perdemos alguns dados?
There is no doubt about the variable rule principle: two forms are variants of a single variable if they share de same context and the same truth value. Although many sociolinguistic searches fall this assumption, syntatic, discursive and pragmatic studies face resistance from some theoretical and require a researcher´s decision: extend the notion of meaning or reduce it. Both alternatives involve discussions: when we extend the meaning, do we still have variable rule? Reducing the meaning, don´t we lose some data?
