Historiografia missioneira: a contribuição dos olhares estrangeiros

Abstract

Frente à lacuna de publicações existente na historiografia do Rio

Grande do Sul no século XIX, o testemunho dos viajantes europeus foi

largamente utilizado por intelectuais da segunda metade daquele

século como fonte para o estudo da História da Capitania/Província do

Rio Grande. Muitas interpretações desenvolvidas por esses cronistas

foram incorporadas por intelectuais rio-grandenses sem uma

perspectiva que considerasse a ausência do recurso ao documental e a

não explicitação dos fundamentos metodológicos no campo do

conhecimento histórico. Entre a grande diversidade de temáticas por

eles abordada, o recorte que será desenvolvido refere-se às

interpretações a respeito das Missões Jesuítico-Guaranis no Rio

Grande Sul, especialmente da participação dos padres jesuítas e do

lugar civilizatório dos guaranis frente ao processo histórico missioneiro.

Against the existing gap in the historiography of Rio Grande do Sul in

the 19th century, European travelers’ testimonies have been widely used

by intellectuals of the second half of that century as a source for

studying the history of the Captaincy/Province of Rio Grande. Many

interpretations developed by these chroniclers were incorporated by

intellectuals in Rio Grande without a perspective to consider the

absence of recourse to documentary sources and the lack of

explanation of the methodological foundations in the field of historical

knowledge. Among the great diversity of topics addressed by them, this

study focuses on interpretations about the Jesuit-Guarani Missions in

Rio Grande do Sul, especially the participation of Jesuit priests and the

civilizing place of Guarani considering the missionary historical process.
