De cultura material, memória, perdas e ganhos

Abstract

A cultura material tem sido estudada pelos mais diferentes campos das ciências humanas. Dentre esses, a arqueologia pretende ter na cultura material o seu objeto e meio, através do qual se dedica à compreensão do fenômeno humano. Contudo, a arqueologia é conhecida como a ciência que estuda sociedades do passado. Essa visão sobre o que seja arqueologia e o que fazem os arqueólogos limita as amplas possibilidades de estudo oferecidas e exigidas pela cultura material. Neste ensaio, se propõe uma reflexão sobre as distintas dimensões da cultura material e qual é o papel dos arqueólogos em relação ao seu estudo, sobretudo no momento em que a arqueologia brasileira vive uma grande expansão tanto na atuação profissional quanto no ensino acadêmico.

Material culture has been studied by many different fields of the humanities. Among these, archaeology wants to have its object and means in material culture by which is dedicated to understanding the human pheno– menon. However, archaeology is known as the science that studies the past societies. This vision about what is the archaeology and what do the archaeologists, it limits the broad, offered and required possibilities of study by the material culture. This essay proposes a reflection on the different dimensions of material culture and the role of archaeologists in relation to its study, especially now that archaeology is living a great expansion both in acting professionally and academically.
