1938: Futebol, identidade nacional e a crônica esportiva no jornal "A Gazeta"

Abstract

O seguinte trabalho é resultado de uma pesquisa histórica que buscou relacionar assuntos relevantes e que já foram alvo de extensos debates historiográficos: identidade nacional e sua relação com a imprensa. Sabemos que a crônica esportiva ganhou cada vez mais espaço nas mídias impressas no início do século XX. Este trabalho buscou retratar a importância dos jornais na difusão do futebol pelo Brasil. A pergunta que moveu a pesquisa foi: quando o Brasil tornou-se o “país do futebol”? Ancorando-se nos estudos de Eric Hobsbawm e Benedict Anderson, a pesquisa aponta que essa tradição inventada foi parte de um projeto político durante o governo de Getúlio Vargas no Estado Novo, quando este buscava imaginar uma comunidade, criar um rosto para o Brasil. A prova viva disso foi a Copa do Mundo de 1938. O projeto varguista ancorou-se em um intelectual que ganhava cada vez mais espaço na escrita da história do Brasil. O conceito de “Democracia racial” foi desenvolvido por Gilberto Freyre e a ideia de harmonia entre as raças vocalizada ainda mais pelo jornalista Mário Filho no seu clássico O negro no futebol brasileiro. A pesquisa também percorreu a trajetória da seleção brasileira no torneio mundial de futebol de 1938, último grande evento esportivo antes da eclosão da II Guerra Mundial. A mesma utilizou como fonte o jornal de Florianópolis intitulado “A Gazeta”, além de apontar também que as ideias de sociedade imaginadas pelo Estado varguista encontravam espaço nas colunas esportivas do jornal catarinense escritas por Osmar Cunha.

The following monograph is the result of a historical research which tried to relate relevant matters that have already been the subject of extense historiographic debates: national identity and its relation with the press. We know that the sports chronicle earned more and more space into press media in the beginnining of the 20th century. The present study intended to illustrate the importance of newspapers in the dissemination of football in Brazil. The question that moved this research was: When has Brazil become the "country of football"? Anchoring in the studies of Eric Hobsbawn and Benedict Anderson, the research points out that this made up tradition was part of a political project during the government of Getúlio Vargas in the Estado Novo regime, when he wished to imagine a community, to create a face for Brazil. The living proof of that was the 1938 World Cup. The Vargas project anchored in an intellectual that continuously earned space in writing the history of Brazil. The concept of "racial democracy" was developed by Gilberto Freyre and the idea of harmony among races was voiced even further by the journalist Mário Filho in his classic O negro no futebol brasileiro. The research also went through the trajectory of the Brazilian national team in the 1938 World Cup, which was the last big sports event before the outbreak of World War II. The newpaper from Florianópolis named "A Gazeta" was used as source and also responsible for pointing out that the ideas of society imagined by the Vargas State had found space in the sports columns written by Osmar Cunha.
