Abstract:
A história recente dos estudos sobre Aquisição de Segunda Língua (ASL) revela a ocorrência de uma série de denominações distintas utilizadas para se fazer referência ao inglês. Apenas para citar alguns exemplos, no mundo contemporâneo, o inglês pode receber os títulos de world English, international English, global English e English as a lingua franca, entre outros tantos. A preocupação com a nomenclatura, que à primeira vista pode não parecer mais do que puro preciosismo, se justifica a partir da necessidade de definição do objeto de estudo das pesquisas conduzidas no campo da ASL. A seleção de uma determinada expressão na alusão ao inglês pode evidenciar os propósitos e as inclinações teóricas do pesquisador fazendo da terminologia algo imprescindível. Neste artigo, os estudos de McArthur (2004), Rajagopalan (2004), Crystal (2003a, 2003b), Holliday (2005), Seidlhofer (2003, 2005), McKay (2002), Pennycook (2007), Erling (2005) e Jenkins (2006) evidenciam alguns dos nomes utilizados por estudiosos e pesquisadores da ASL para referir à língua inglesa nos últimos tempos.
Recent Second Language Acquisition (SLA) studies show the occurrence of a series of distinct denominations used to refer to the English language. Amongst these, to name a few, are World English, International English, Global English and English as a Lingua Franca. This preoccupation with terminology, which at first glance seems to be pure preciosity, is justified by the need to define the object of study of SLA research. The choice of a determined expression can demonstrate the purposes and theoretical concepts of the researcher, who makes the terminology paramount. In this paper the studies of McArthur (2004), Rajagopalan (2004), Crystal (2003a, 2003b), Holliday (2005), Seidlhofer (2003, 2005), McKay (2002), Pennycook (2007), Erling (2005) and Jenkins (2006) are used to highlight some of the names applied by scholars and researchers of SLA to refer to the English language in recent times.
