Abstract:
Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar duas histórias da literatura brasileira: História da literatura brasileira, de Luciana Stegagno-Picchio, e De Anchieta a Euclides: breve história da literatura brasileira, de José Guilherme Merquior. Parto para a sistematização de uma fortuna crítica no que concerne à Teoria da história da literatura. Em seguida, estendo o referencial bibliográfico e realizo um aprofundamento nos estudos teóricos da história da literatura, organizando simultaneamente o diálogo entre as obras selecionadas para o estudo desta pesquisa. Investigo como se desenvolvem os discursos nessas histórias da literatura, isto é, quais os critérios atribuem para suas escolhas de escrita na concepção do texto e estabelecimento do cânone e quais formas narrativas se valem para apresentar seu material. Também averiguo, dentro das histórias da literatura citadas, quatro prosadores brasileiros – selecionando os que mais se destacam pela quantidade de conteúdo e informação –elas têm em comum,além de observar aproximações e afastamentos que Luciana Stegagno-Picchio e José Guilherme Merquior apresentam sobre esses escritores.Analisando as duas histórias da literatura escolhidas para esta dissertação,os prosadores que recebem mais destaque em ambas obras são José de Alencar, Manuel Antonio de Almeida, Machado de Assis e Raul Pompeia; julgo ser pertinente mencionar que eles estão situados em dois momentos literários brasileiros: Romantismo e Realismo.Os resultados mostram que os historiadores literários, objetos desta pesquisa, têm vieses distintos, devido às suas metodologias.Ao serem cotejados, os historiadores revelam que seus juízos de valor e pontos de vista são fundamentais no constructo de suas narrativas.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze two histories of Brazilian literature: The History of Brazilian Literature, by Luciana Stegagno-Picchio, and From Anchieta to Euclides: A Brief History of Brazilian Literature, by José Guilherme Merquior. I start with the systematization of a critical fortune regarding the theory of the history of literature. Then, I extend the bibliographic framework and deepen into the theoretical studies of the history of literature, while organizing the dialogue between the works selected for the study of this research. I investigate how discourses develop in these histories of literature, that is, which criteria they attribute to their writing choices in the conception of the text and the establishment of the canon and which narrative forms they use to present their material. I also inquire, within the literature histories mentioned above, four Brazilian prose writers –selecting those who stand out the most for the amount of content and information –they have in common, as well as observing the approximations and distances that Luciana Stegagno-Picchio and José Guilherme Merquior present about these writers. Analyzing the two literature histories chosen for this dissertation, the prose writers the most highlighted in both works are José de Alencar, Manuel Antonio de Almeida, Machado de Assis and Raul Pompeia; I consider pertinent to mention that they are situated in two Brazilian literary moments: Romanticism and Realism. The results show that the literary historians, objects of this research, have distinct biases, due to their methodologies. When compared, the historians reveal that their value judgments and points of view are fundamental in the construct of their narratives.
