Breve História da Literatura brasileira, de Erico Verissimo: do contador de histórias ao historiador da Literatura

Abstract

Esta pesquisa está vinculada ao projeto “A historiografia literária de autoria sulina”, de responsabilidade do professor Carlos Alexandre Baumgarten. Nesse sentido, desenvolve-se a análise, com base nos pressupostos da Teoria da História da Literatura, de Breve história da literatura brasileira, texto escrito por Erico Verissimo na década de 40 do século XX. Embora tenha sido editado em 1945 pela The Macmilhan Company e depois reeditado em 1969 pela Greenwood Press, a obra foi lançada no Brasil apenas na década de 90, a partir de um trabalho de tradução realizado por um grupo de pesquisadoras da PUCRS, sob a coordenação da professora Maria da Glória Bordini. A análise da historiografia literária em questão enfoca, primeiramente, a imprescindibilidade de salientar a importância que estudos da História da Literatura vêm ganhando, especialmente a partir do final dos anos 60 do século passado. Seu exame também se torna fundamental justamente por resgatar e divulgar uma produção historiográfica que, a despeito de sua importância, tem alcançado raras pesquisas no campo dos estudos literários. Nesse sentido, torna-se imperioso realizar esta investigação sobre material significativo para a compreensão do processo de escrita da história da literatura brasileira e regional. Na sequência, busca-se investigar a visão que Erico Verissimo tem da literatura brasileira do período colonial e, posteriormente, daquela produzida no Brasil independente, demonstrando as transformações históricas, políticas e, sobretudo, sociais, cujos reflexos na literatura nacional motivaram uma preocupação maior nos autores modernistas, o que contribuiu para a literatura brasileira, segundo Erico, alcançar sua maioridade. Além de todas as determinações da elaboração dos critérios apresentados, este trabalho preocupou-se em revelar a simpatia do autor gaúcho em questão pelos aspectos sociais evidentes na literatura, já que principalmente estes teriam uma importância maior, pelo fato de funcionarem como uma ferramenta para a compreensão de um tempo difícil na humanidade. 7 Apesar de o trabalho de Erico não chegar a se constituir em uma inovadora história da literatura brasileira, ele acaba revelando uma textura histórica inusitada, se forem levadas em consideração as marcas de um tempo difícil da estrutura social brasileira e mundial. Além disso, sua criatividade, seu colóquio singular e sua consciência literária vislumbram um novo horizonte em nossa historiografia literária, abrindo, desse modo, espaço para novas e interessantes reflexões e debates acerca da literatura de nosso País.

This research is linked to the project entitled “The literary historiography of southern authorship”, coordinated by Professor Dr. Carlos Alexandre Baumgarten. In this sense, the analysis of Brief history of the Brazilian literature, a text written by Erico Verissimo in the 1940’s, is developed based on the principles of the Theory of History of Literature. Although it was edited in 1945 by The Macmilhan Company, and, some time later, reissued in 1969 by Greenwood Press, the book was released in Brazil only in the 1990’s from a translation made by a group of researchers from PUCRS, under orientation of Professor Dr. Maria da Glória Bordini. The analysis of the literary historiography in question focuses, firstly, how essential it is to emphasize the importance that studies in the History of Literature field have been achieving, especially since the late 1960's. Research in this perspective also become elementary precisely for recovering and disseminating a historiographical production which, despite its importance, have spread through few researches in the literary studies field. Moreover, it is vital to perform an investigation on significant material to understand the process of writing the history of Brazilian and regional literature. After this, the vision that Erico Verissimo has of the Brazilian literature from the colonial period is investigated, and, also, what he thinks about the country after its independence from Portugal. The historical, political and, above all, social transformations that then occurred are discussed. Their reflection on the national literature have motivated a wider concern on modern authors, which has contributed for the Brazilian literature to achieve its full growth, according to Erico. In addition to all the determinations listed, this work is concerned in revealing the gaucho author's sympathy for social aspects evident in the literature, because they would have a wider importance, since they work as an instrument to the understanding of a difficult time in humanity. Although Erico's reflections do not constitute a new history of the Brazilian literature, they reveal an unusual historical texture, if the marks of a difficult time in the Brazilian and world's social structure are taken into consideration. Furthermore, his creativity, his unique conversation, and his literary consciousness envision a new horizon in our literary historiography, opening, therefore, space for innovative and interesting ideas and debates concerning the literature of our country.
