Abstract:
A condição comunicativa da obra literária é estruturalmente construída segundo parâmetros
de gênero literário e de formalização de um lugar no texto para o autor e o leitor. Essa questão
interessa para o estudo de aspectos críticos ainda latentes no contexto brasileiro e que dizem respeito
ao modo como se construiu, pela literatura, uma compreensão de formação do Brasil. Nesse sentido,
analiso como a configuração retórica do leitor em O guarani, de José de Alencar, expressa as
condições de produção de cultura letrada no Brasil oitocentista. Esse romance representativo de nosso
Romantismo explicita a problemática da construção de legibilidade da narrativa, enquanto discurso
ficcional, num contexto pouco letrado. De fato, o narrador de O guarani cumpre a dupla função de
apresentar fatos históricos e uma certa geografia física e humana do Brasil, além de preparar o leitor
brasileiro para compreender o mecanismo da narrativa ficcional.
The communicability of a literary work is structurally built according to parameters of
literary genre and the configuration of a place in the text to both author and reader. This issue is of
interest to the study of certain critical aspects which are still latent in the Brazilian context and have to
do with the role of literature in the building of a particular understanding of the formation of Brazil. In
this sense, this article analyses how the rhetorical configuration of the reader in O guarani by José de
Alencar expresses conditions of the production of print culture in nineteenth-century Brazil. This
representative novel of Brazilian Romanticism clearly shows the difficulty in ensuring that narratives
are legible as fictional discourse in a mostly illiterate context. In fact, the narrator of O guarani has the
double function of presenting historical events and a certain physical and human geography of Brazil
and preparing the Brazilian reader to understand the internal organization of the fictional narrative.
