Abstract:
Com a independência do Brasil surgiu a necessidade de imaginar o país como uma nação. A literatura romântica foi muito importante nesse processo, pois filiados ao projeto literário nacional os escritores elaboraram narrativas nas quais destacaram as peculiaridades locais, com intuito de representar e difundir os ideais nacionais. É nessa época que o romance Úrsula, de Maria Firmina dos Reis, é publicado. Entretanto, apesar de inserido na tradição romântica, ele diverge de seus contemporâneos porque a nação é narrada pelo ponto de vista da mulher negra, através de uma perspectiva afroidentificada comprometida em recuperar a história e expor as condições de vida do sujeito negro no Brasil oitocentista. Assim, a presente dissertação propõe uma leitura do romance Úrsula, com base nas considerações teóricas das ficções fundacionais propostas por Doris Sommer (2004) e do projeto literário nacional discutido por Antonio Candido (2000), bem como nos conceitos da literatura de autoria negra abordados por Octavio Ianni (2011), Cuti (2010), Edimilson Pereira (1995; 2011), Eduardo de Assis Duarte (2011), entre outros estudiosos do tema. A partir dessas teorias, buscamos identificar os elementos textuais que fazem de Úrsula, de Maria Firmina dos Reis, um romance fundacional da literatura afro-brasileira.
With the independence of Brazil, the need arose to imagine the country as a nation. Romantic literature was very important in this process, since affiliated to the national literary project, writers elaborated narratives in which they highlighted local peculiarities, with the intention of representing and spreading national ideals. It is at this time that the novel Úrsula, by Maria Firmina dos Reis, is published. However, despite being inserted in the romantic tradition, he diverges from his contemporaries because the nation is narrated from the point of view of the black woman, through an afro-affected perspective committed to recovering history and exposing the life conditions of the black subject in 19th century Brazil. Thus, the present dissertation proposes a reading of the novel Úrsula, based on the theoretical considerations of the foundational fictions proposed by Doris Sommer (2004) and the national literary project discussed by Antonio Candido (2000), as well as on the concepts of black authored literature addressed by Octavio Ianni (2011), Cuti (2010), Edimilson Pereira (1995; 2011), Eduardo de Assis Duarte (2011), among other scholars on the subject. Based on these theories, we seek to identify the textual elements that make Úrsula, by Maria Firmina dos Reis, a foundational novel of Afro-Brazilian literature.
