Entre o “melhoramento reclamado pela ciência” e os “sentimentos religiosos da população”: os embates em torno das práticas funerárias na cidade de Vitória-ES(1880-1912)

Abstract

Este artigo analisa jornais, relatórios de Presidentes de Províncias e Estados, bem como documentos da Inspetoria de Higiene do Espírito Santo no final do século XIX e início do século XX, com o objetivo de compreender as transformações no significado de morte e morrer ocorridos na capital. capixaba durante o período em tela. Isso não só influenciou o envio de recursos para obras de infraestrutura de interesse, como também postergou a construção de um novo cemitério, sobrepondo seus interesses econômicos de curto prazo aos benefícios coletivos de saúde da população capixaba.

This article analyzes newspapers, reports from the President of Provinces and States, as well as documents from the Inspectorate of Hygiene of Espírito Santo at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, with the objective of understanding the transformations in the meaning of death and dying that occurred in the capital. capixaba during the period on screen. The 'delay' in removing cemeteries in the central region of the city draws attention, as unlike other Brazilian capitals, the construction of an extramural holy field in Vitória could only materialize in the second decade of the 20th century. In light of this untimely outcome, the article argues that, given the clash between the Catholic view and modern dictates on death, the interests of a portion of the local agro-export elite prevailed. This not only influenced the sending of funds to infrastructure works of interest, but also postponed the construction of a new cemetery, superimposing its short-term economic interests on the collective health benefits of the population of Espírito Santo.
