Abstract:
a nossa leitura de O outro Pé da Sereia – romance da autoria do
escritor moçambicano Mia Couto – aborda-o como exemplo de «metaficção
historiográfica», para usar a expressão de Linda Hutcheon. Acompanha
nele a forma como aí se questionam «a História» e a sua verdade. Parte
de uma epígrafe colhida de «Arcanjo Mistura» – o barbeiro-«filósofo»
de «Vila Longe», para nela discutir uma diferente concepção do tempo e
da morte. Será no desdobramento dos pressupostos da sua fórmula que:
a) «História» se confrontará com os seus próprios dilemas; b) o violento
choque entre culturas distintas tornará sensível o espaçamento que abre
o «real» às tensões que afetam o seu entendimento histórico; c) a viagem
e a escrita serão ambas compreendidas como modos metafóricos de um
movimento desincorporador, por meio do qual tem lugar a «travessia das
nossas fronteiras interiores»...
O Outro Pé da Sereia – The Mermaid’s Other Foot –
a postcolonial novel by the Mozambican writer Mia Couto, is here
addressed as an example of «historiographic metafic-tion», to use Linda
Hutcheon’s term. Our reading follows the way both History and its claim
to truthfulness are called into question in the novel. Beginning with a quote
from the «Arcan-jo Mistura», the barber-«philosopher» of «Vila Longe»,
it discusses his different conception of time and death. And it will be on
the unfolding grounds of his formula that: a) History will be confronted
with its own dilemmas; b) the violent clash of different cultures will bring
out the spacing that opens up «reality» to the tensions that will affect its
historical understanding; c) travelling and writing will both be understood
as metaphorical instances of a disembodying motion by means of which «the crossing of our internal frontiers» takes place...
