Luiz Gama como Perseu romântico: engajamento literário em Primeiras trovas burlescas de Getulino

Abstract

A presente dissertação oferece um exame crítico de Primeiras trovas burlescas de Getulino (1859), único livro de poemas de Luiz Gama (1830-1882). Obra que, relegada a apêndices e notas de rodapé nos volumes de história da literatura, constitui o testemunho literário de um poeta negro que viveu a escravidão no Brasil Imperial. Sua leitura demonstra, através da analogia com Perseu (CALVINO, 2016), o herói mítico que combateu a Medusa, a qualidade dual da poética de Luiz Gama. Suas duas “armas”, a sátira e a lírica, traduzem duas estratégias de engajamento com a realidade que o cerca: a sátira revoltada e zombeteira agride a realidade, dedicada a expor suas chagas – é a espada de Perseu; enquanto a lírica, encantadora e melancólica, exprime uma contemplação utópica da sociedade, refletindo-a distorcida – é o escudo espelhado de Perseu. Essa realidade, naturalmente, é Medusa, cujo olhar tem poder de petrificar os que vivem sob seu domínio. A espada e o escudo espelhado de Perseu-Gama representam, ademais, seu vínculo com o Romantismo, definido como expressão de revolta e melancolia (LÖWY; SAYRE, 2016) perante o mundo moderno, e compõem o impulso estético que guia seu engajamento literário (SARTRE, 2015). Diante de um mundo petrificado, Luiz Gama faz da poesia uma tarefa existencial, capaz de tornar leve o peso do viver.

This thesis offers a critical exam of Primeiras trovas burlescas de Getulino (1859), the only book of poems written by Luiz Gama (1830-1882), a literary testament of a black poet that survived slavery during the Brazilian Empire, although relegated to the appendixes and footnotes in the volumes of history of literature. Our aim is to demonstrate, through an analogy with Perseus (CALVINO, 2016), the hero who fought the Medusa, the dual quality of Luiz Gama’s poetics. His two “weapons”, the satire and the lyric, depict the strategies with which he manages to engage, literarily, with the reality that surrounds him: the sneering and revolted satire strikes reality, devoted to expose its wounds – it’s Perseus’ sword; meanwhile the lyric, enchanting and melancholic, conceive a utopic glance on society, distorting its reflection – it’s Perseus’ mirrored shield. That reality is, naturally, the Medusa, whose gaze has the power to petrify those who live under its rule. Moreover, the sword and mirrored shield of Perseus-Gama represents his bond with Romanticism, defined as an expression of revolt and melancholy (LÖWY; SAYRE, 2015) towards the modern world, a viewpoint that contains the aesthetic impulse that guides his literary engagement (SARTRE, 2015).
