Abstract:
Neste artigo, serão analisados alguns aspectos dos relatos do viajante naturalista Auguste de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853), alusivos às impressões que o mesmo registrara sobre a paisagem da recém-constituída cidade do Rio Grande-RS, no sentido de apreender os valores que o mesmo atribuiu à natureza em alguns espaços desta nascente urbe. Para isso, situaremos a sua produção ao contexto histórico em que estava imerso o viajante, tanto no que tange à cidade como no relacionado ao panorama europeu, com sua visão de mundo e concepções de homem ocidental que era. Apreendemos em Saint-Hilaire uma íntima relação entre os seus valores éticos e estéticos, na medida em que a apreciação negativa que ele fez da paisagem rústica ou virgem – o feio – esteve enraizado na idéia de atraso civilizacional.
In this article, some aspects of the traveler reported naturalist Auguste de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853), depicting the impressions that it had registered over the landscape of the newly incorporated town of Rio Grande-RS, will be analyzed in order to grasp the values which it attributed to nature in some spaces of this developing metropolis. For this, we will establish its production to the historical context in which the traveler was immersed, both with regard to the city as the related European scene, with their worldview and Western conceptions of man he was. Apprehended in Saint-Hilaire is an intimate relationship between their ethical and aesthetic values, to the extent that the negative assessment he made of virgin or rustic landscape - the ugly - was rooted in the idea of civilizational backwardness.
