Although Environmental Education is not considered a school subject in Brazil, it must be included in the syllabus as an extra theme. Some authors believe that the present fragmentation of teaching is strongly associated with the way we understand the world from a socio-environmental perspective. In this context, we have implemented the project “Environmental Education: experiencing theory and practice in in-service education”, which is connected with the Extension Department at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. It aims at developing teachers who will be able to teach this topic, constructing new educational proposals for schools, preparing tools for educators, and verifying the importance of an in-service course to find new ways to perceive, understand, and interact with the environment and themselves. The participants’ conceptions of environment and Environmental Education formed the basis for this study. Results confirm the importance and show the need for in-service education in this field since there were changes in these conceptions at the end of the course.
